The patriotic holiday season is in full swing — Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day — then of course, this week, Independence Day, presenting unique opportunities for us to shop, swim and barbecue, while some of us completely miss the significance of each day. “There were no heroes. We just did what we had to do.” Those are the words I heard over and over from World War II veterans I had the honor of meeting recently. I had just returned from another Honor Flight and once again was left feeling humbled and inadequate in the presence of greatness and heroism. There were medals and ribbons and scars.
